Acral Lick Dermatitis

Dog VetAcral Lick Dermatitis (also known as Lick Granuloma) is a skin disease prevalent in certain breeds of dog caused by their excessive urge to lick or chew the skin covering the lower portion of the leg. This results in the creation of hard, thick lesions around the affected area, clearly visible by the resultant loss of hair.

Acral Lick Dermatitis is invariably caused by an obsessive compulsive disorder often resulting from boredom or mental or emotional unhappiness, particularly in larger breeds such as the Dobermann, German Shepherd and Great Dane if left alone for long periods of time. It can also be caused by the stress of moving home, the bereavement of a family member or other pet, or a change of routine.

Other breeds particularly susceptible to this disease include the Dalmatian, Labrador Retriever, Irish Setter, Border Collie and Golden Retriever.

The cost of treatment for this problem can amount to hundreds of pounds. Don't wait until your dog is suffering from Acral Lick Dermatitis before considering dog insurance. Visit Compare Dog Insurance for the cheapest and most competitive dog insurance available.
