Dry Eye

Dog VetDry Eye (more properly known as Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca), is a relatively common eye condition caused by a malfunction in the tear gland which results in insufficient tear production. As tear production lubricates and protects a dog's eyes, this insufficiency may lead to other eye problems such as secondary corneal ulcers.

A dog suffering from Dry Eye is likely to have a glossy film over the eye, further evidenced by a persistent redness of the eye together with a thick, slimy green or white discharge. This condition can be painful and can be accompanied by impaired vision.

This condition is most often the result of an autoimmune problem in which a dog's tear glands are effectively attacked by its own immune system. It can also be caused by infections, reactions to medication, nerve damage or corneal ulcerations.

Depending on its severity, Dry Eye can generally be treated with medication including antibiotics, artifical tear drops, steroids or drugs which modulate the activity of the immune system known as immune-modulating drugs. In rare cases this problem may require surgery, but only if the dog fails to respond to the previously mentioned medication.

The cost of treatment for this problem can amount to hundreds of pounds. Don't wait until your dog is suffering from Dry Eye before considering dog insurance. Visit Compare Dog Insurance for the cheapest and most competitive dog insurance available.
