 Bloat (also known as Gastric Dilatation Volvulus or GDV), is a potentially fatal condition in which food (or gas) causes a dog's stomach to stretch many times its normal size, resulting in abdominal pain and which can result in the stomach twisting on itself, trapping the food or gas within it and cutting off the blood supply to the stomach. Bloat is a condition which affects mainly the deep-chested dog breeds such as the Bloodhound, Greyhound, Great Dane, Irish Setter, Mastiff and Weimaraner, and is thought to come about if such dogs eat their meal very quickly, and then exercise vigorously. With such dogs it is advisable to feed them the same quantity of food as usual, but to spread it over several sittings.
