Dog Breeds - Terrier Group
The Terrier Group of dogs comprises dogs bred originally to hunt vermin. The word Terrier comes from Terra, the Latin for earth, and most Terrier dogs originated in Great Britain, only the Australian Terrier and the Cesky Terrier having their origins outside of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Containing dogs, some of which have been known since the Middle Ages, dogs in the Terrier Group tend to have been selectively bred to be tenacious, tough and courageous enough to pursue their prey (foxes, badgers, rats, mice, otters, etc) both above and below ground. Their degree of independence can sometimes make Terriers more difficult to train. |
