Dog and Puppy Don'ts

Any new dog owner should consider the following list as essential to responsible dog ownership:

  • Don't allow your dog to bark incessantly.
  • Don't allow your dog to foul footpaths or public spaces. Under the Dogs (Fouling of Land Act) 1996, it is an offense punishable by a Local Authority fine.
  • Don't ignore Local Authority Dog Control Orders that prohibit dogs from certain public places, as indicated by appropriate signage.
  • Don't leave your dog unattended in a vehicle, particularly during hot weather, for any length of time.
  • Don't spoil your dog. You are not being kind to your dog by spoiling it, you are creating behavioural problems that could come back to haunt you!
  • Don't overfeed your dog. Once again, you are not being kind to your dog by overfeeding it. You are creating health problems for your dog, unnecessary expensive for yourself and perhaps even shortening your dog's life!
  • Don't allow your dog off its lead on farmland on which lifestock is grazing or crops are planted.
  • Don't leave your dog on its own for long periods of time. Understand your breed. Many dog breeds simply cannot tolerate long periods without the company of people.
  • Don't allow your dog to stray from your home on its own.
